Tightness That Keeps Holding You Back

You've stretched, foam-rolled, and taken your rest days. Still, that deep tightness through your glutes, upper traps, or calves keeps coming back.

For active people it's more than uncomfortable. It cuts into workouts, stretches out recovery time, and chips away at your confidence heading into training or competition.

Massage helps, but sometimes the problem sits deeper than surface tension. That's where cupping therapy can make a real difference.

How Cupping Therapy Works

Cupping therapy places suction cups on the skin to create negative pressure over targeted muscle groups. Where massage compresses tissue, cupping decompresses it, drawing fluid into the area to increase blood flow, release fascial adhesions, calm chronic muscle guarding, and help clear metabolic waste from overworked tissue.

The circular marks it can leave are not bruises. They're blood drawn to the surface, and they fade within 3 to 7 days.

At NTX Sport and Spine, we use dry cupping with mechanical suction, and we can add movement for a stronger effect, a technique called dynamic cupping.

Cupping as Part of a Complete Sports Care Plan

At NTX Sport and Spine, cupping therapy isn't an add-on. It's built into how we treat the whole athlete.

Dr. Sam Gaston brings a sports-focused clinical eye to every session. Instead of placing cups at random, we assess how you move, find the compensating tension, and target the specific areas holding you back, so your session fits your body and your goals and not a generic protocol.

We often pair cupping with dry needling or soft tissue mobilization for complex sports injuries, chronic muscle tension, or post-competition recovery, since the best results usually come from combining tools thoughtfully.

If you also have a chiropractic concern, we can address both in the same visit.

Your First Cupping Session: What to Expect

Cupping is often one of the more surprising treatments patients try, in a good way. A typical session looks like this:

Step 1: Assessment. We go over your symptoms, training history, and goals, then use your movement and complaint patterns to decide which areas need the most attention.

Step 2: Treatment. Cups go on the target areas. We may hold them in place for several minutes or guide them through a range of motion for dynamic cupping. Most patients describe a pulling, heavy pressure that feels unusual but not painful.

Step 3: Integration. Once the cups come off, we often follow with movement work or manual therapy and walk you through home care that helps the results last.

Sessions generally run 20 to 45 minutes, depending on what else we're addressing. Many patients feel lighter, looser, and more mobile right away, and better still the next day.

Benefits Patients Report from Cupping

Cupping therapy suits active patients and people with musculoskeletal complaints especially well. Benefits patients commonly report:

Quicker recovery between sessions. Less soreness and a faster turnaround between workouts or competitions.

Less tightness and guarding. Particularly useful for the upper back, neck, IT band, glutes, and calves.

Better range of motion. As fascia releases, joints move more freely, and many patients notice more flexibility after the first session.

Targeted pain relief. Plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff strain, hip flexor tightness, and thoracic stiffness tend to respond well when cupping is part of the right care plan.

Support for sports injury recovery. Whether you've strained a muscle, overloaded a tendon, or are working back from a bigger injury, cupping is a useful addition to the rehab toolkit.

Most patients find cupping deeply relaxing and not painful. You'll feel a pulling or suction sensation, and tight spots can feel intense, but discomfort is usually minimal. We adjust the pressure to your tolerance.

The marks come from blood being drawn to the surface. They aren't bruises, they shouldn't be tender, and they typically fade within 3 to 7 days.

It depends on the problem. For acute muscle tightness, many patients improve noticeably after one or two sessions. For chronic patterns or sports injury recovery, a short series of 4 to 6 sessions over a few weeks is common.
